What they do better than anyone is shut down with interrupts and/or e-denial. Since most mobs are full of casters who need to be dealt with early, especially healers, why would you want your mesmer to focus on any other role?

Just as some have said before, try some Domination skills in combination with
[skill]Assassin's Promise[/skill]
depending on who do you want to deal with.

For AoE damage you can use some of those:
[skill]Cry of Frustration[/skill][skill]Mistrust[/skill][skill]Shatter Hex[/skill][skill]Spiritual Pain[/skill] or Cry of Pain.

For finishing off the Promised target/spamming to other targets:
[skill]Empathy[/skill][skill]Backfire[/skill][skill]Energy Burn[/skill][skill]Shatter Enchantment[/skill][skill]Power Spike[/skill][skill]Signet of Disruption[/skill]

In the Eye of the North you can even play some yoyo game with the enemy's energy before killing him, using Energy Burn and some of
[skill]Power Leak[/skill][skill]Signet of Weariness[/skill][skill]Price of Pride[/skill] with Aneurysm.

If you feel short of energy you can even use, without stepping out of Domination:
[skill]Guilt[/skill]

Attribute points: 16 Domination, 10 or more on Deadly Arts. The rest you can put them on Fast Casting or on Illusion/Inspiration should you need some skills from those lines.

If you time the Promise well, you can tear almost any mob in a matter of seconds.

[skill]Arcane Echo[/skill][skill]Energy Surge[/skill][skill]Energy Burn[/skill][skill]Backfire[/skill][skill]Inspired Hex[/skill][skill]Inspired Enchantment[/skill][skill]Resurrect[/skill][skill]Shatter Enchantment[/skill]

My most general pve build, which pretty much saw me through to legendary guardian:

[optional] (usually Power Drain)
[empathy]
[backfire]
[necrosis]
[cry of pain]
[mantra of recovery]
[ether signet]
[optional] (usually Finish Him!)

something like 12+1+2 dom, 10+1 fast casting, rest insp.

Simply amazing, very fast single target damage allowing you to spike down important mobs, along with possibly the best AoE in the game recharging every 8 seconds.

Sometimes I play elementalist at the request of the group leader, and it's amazing how much more damage the mesmer's armor-ignoring skills can do, especially against high-level enemies.

I know I've come late to the party, and I haven't bothered to read the whole thread, but....

I don't see the point of this thread at all. What difference does it make if other classes can do some things better. If you enjoy playing a Mesmer - do so.

well, I think that I have read all the posts in this thread, so here are a few things that I have done in the past that worked pretty well (possibly better than anything else can do them).

Air Impersonator
Air 12
FC high (+ mask + sup rune)
Insp med-high (if using it)

[skill]Mantra of recovery[/skill][skill]air attunement[/skill][skill]glyph of lesser energy[/skill][skill]Lightning orb[/skill]
The other four slots can be filled with whatever you think helps you best (res, blinding flash, shell shock, power drain, lightning hammer, leech signet, lightning strike, etc). I usually preferred to have at least two, often three, damage dealing spells that can be cycled through. If you add L-hammer, you will also likely need the extra energy that p-drain or leech brings. If you add b-surge or enerverating, you may want to also bring epidemic. You can also bring glyph of elemental power, but it lacks synergy with GoLE, so I generally leave it out. If you bring too many 10e+ spells, p-drain will pretty much be needed.

Basically, you get single target damage (for high level areas where 25% armor penetration is helpful) and possibly blind or weakness, and those can be AoE.

The advantage with this over E/Me is that you cast the spells faster and you cast them more often at the loss of some damage per spell (Lightning Orb is 86 dmg every 4 seconds -3 recharge, 1 cast- instead of 106 dmg every 7 seconds -5 recharge, 2 cast). Over time, the faster casting makes up for the reduced damage (E/Me would have 848 dmg over 60 seconds, Me/E would have 1290). Admittedly the build worked significantly better before MoR was nerfed to 33%, but it seems to still hold its own.

Also, I haven't tried it with fire, earth, or water, but I assume that something could be made there as well.

AoE Flasher
Air 12
Inspiration 10-11 (plus rune + mask)
Fast Casting (med)

[skill]extend conditions[/skill][skill]Blinding flash[/skill][skill]epidemic[/skill]
The other five slots can be filled with whatever other utility you want, but you will absolutely need something for e-mgmt. GoLE works ok, but isn't great because you endup wasting some of it since extend is only 5e (GoLE->Blinding Flash->Extend Conditions). P-drain/drain enchantment are better, and inspired/revealed hex/enchantment would work as well. Even energy tap would be ok because of the outrageously high Insp, but it is still a loooong cast since FC is not very high. Spirit of Failure seems like it would work well, but I find it doesn't since mobs die so fast (they have to miss at least 5 times to pay for it and then if they die or it gets stripped, you are out of luck for the next 15 seconds or so...also it has a long cast time). For the rest of the build, you can bring enerverating charge, shell shock, random pve skills, etc.

The advantage here over an E/Me are minimal, but does the job as well as an Ele could (the total time of blindness is *slightly* longer on the Me/E and the total time of weakness/cracked armor is the same since EC is capped at 30 seconds). The only real advantage is that you could sustain it for longer by using the correct energy management (since all the really applicable e-mgmt spells are in insp and the Me/E would have a higher attb there).

As a side note, this build really shines if you bring a Virulence Necro or bleeding/poisoning wars and rangers. A real issue with the build is that it seems like you should be able to stack the conditions before hitting EC/Epi, but fights are generally short enough in PvE that you really should use BF->EC->Epi->utility or Shell Shock/Enerverating->EC->Epi. With BF on a 4 sec cooldown and EC/Epi on a 5 sec, you can really spam them while you have the energy for it.

Edit: I wrote "Blinding Surge" multiple times throughout and didn't notice until I posted...if you see any, I meant Blinding Flash.

Red face PvE Mesmer Randomness

Well, I know I'm not the best mesmer around, but here's what I use for just random PvE excursions when I don't feel like reading up on where I'm going.

Fast Casting 8+1
Illusion Magic 12+1+3 <-- Personal preference, truly
Inspiration Magic 10+1

Necrosis
Cry of Pain
Echo {E} / Mantra of Recovery {E} / Signet of Illusions {E} / Ineptitude {E}
Shrinking Armor
Clumsiness
Auspicious Incantation
Conjure Nightmare / Snowstorm
Res

Depending on which elite I choose to bring I change the build, when I take MoR I bring along Dwarven Stability to increase it's duration so it lasts it's recharge. With Inept, epidemic. with Sig of Illusions I go 12 fast casting, 12 illusion,

At r9 Sunspear Necrosis does 80 damage, has a .66 casting time due to FC, 2 second recharge {1 with MoR}, 5 en. Using it with Shrinking armor fulfills it's hex/condition requirement for 31 seconds at 16 illusions magic.

I find it an interesting build to play, probably not for everyone, but whatever, to each his own. I also haven't slept yet so please excuse any mistakes I may have made.

I only got to the 3rd page whilst scanning the board at work so I dont know if this has already been said..

Virulence Spiker with 0 in Death Magic and 16 in Illusion and 13 in FC.

Put Fragility, Conjure Nightmare, Accumalted pain (may be the wrong name there - the hex which gives Deep Wound if the target already has 2 hexes on them), Virulence. + 2 utility slots.

Then switch focus to have enough energy to lay down Ethereal Burden - Just in time for them to die. (get back some energy whilst waiting for it to reload).

That one way for a Mesmer to lay down an insane amount of (armour ignoring) damage/degen on a single target. And does it quicker than an ele, quicker than an necro and quicker than a D/Slasher.

Of course if you get fragility stripped before pulling off the Deepwound you're bolloxed until it recharges.

Peace.

I don't worry about "outperforming other professions" when playing my Mesmer - I worry about contributing as much as I can to the team's success. The build I normally run is:

[skill]Echo[/skill][skill]Backfire[/skill][skill]Empathy[/skill][skill]Cry Of Pain[/skill][skill]Energy Tap[/skill][skill]Power Drain[/skill][skill]Leech Signet[/skill][skill]Some sort of rez[/skill]

1. This may be a "jack of all trades" build, but I find this build to be quite funtional in nearly every PvE area, and I can do a lot of damage with it, as well as prevent a lot of damage to my team.

2. Echo gives it a bit of flexibility. - If it's a melee heavy mob, empathy gets echoed, if a caster heavy mob, backfire gets the nod.

3. It's not a one enemy at a time thing, get the hexes on main targets, interrupt the heavy hitting ele spells, and whack 'em all with Cry of Pain. Then, as the hexes re-charge, apply them to whichever enemy needs it.

4. When down in the realm of torment, I replace echo with E-surge and replace Leech Signet with LB gaze and watch the margonites & stuff drop like flies.

5. I've also thrown "Pain Inverter" in there for those special times when you just have to put the smack-down on that overpowered Boss.

Mesmers are good against casters.

Necros are good against melee.
